Have you been thinking about short hair?!
January 18, 2012I was inspired by the Golden Globes this weekend, watching all of the stars with their beautifully short hair. The look so elegant and feminine, youthful and fun! I hear a lot of women say that they could never have short hair because of this or that face shape or feature. The truth is you just have to find the right cut to bring out and frame your best features. I think every woman should try a short cut at least once in their life. It is empowering and can have the strength to advertise your confidence in a vary comfortable and elegant way. Winter time is an introspective time and we can spend time on our look cause it wont melt in the sun and we are under so many layers, it is easy to let function take over fashion. Here are a few examples of different face shapes with short hair. And remember that short can very and does not have to mean all gone!

Keeping the length on top and having the sides tight allow you to change from bold to soft looks all with the same hair cut!

Short hair is a great way to bring length to rounder face shapes. Notice the tight sides and the height on top.
Bringing in a photograph of a style you like on a similar face shape to yours is a great way to open the dialog with your stylist about what look might work best on you.
As a stylist who looooves cutting feminine short hair cuts, I want to remind you that you should feel comfortable and trust your stylist. Consultations are vary important in insuring that you feel confident in your new do. Also complimentary maintenance hair cuts keep you short look feeling fresh.
Please come and see us at Studio 229 on Capitol Hill in Seattle for an awesome short hair cut!

December 21, 2011Kelly Osbourne has lavender locks, Kate Bosworth has blue tipped ends and Lauren Conrad’s tie-dyed hair shows that clients want an array of fashion colors this season. All over Europe as well as the U.S. sophisticated salon step-ups have been appearing. Warren Tricomi created NYC based Edward Tricomi Salon’s Splash Color Interpretation (color is simply splashed on), and encourages salons to create their own signature hair color services. His dos and don’ts for trend tapping:
DO: The “Hipness factor”:It’s about the hair, the makeup, clothing and the personality working together to create a harmonious look.
DO: Choose hair colors based on the season. For fall, experiment with reds, oranges and yellows. For spring try pinks, blues, and greens.
DON’T: Overdo it. Pick one or two colors.
DON’T: Try and be punk. This is an elegant an sophisticated style; it’s modern art.

December 9, 2011With Winter upon us here in “sunny” Seattle we at Studio 229 Hair Salon believe it’s important to stay in great spirits this holiday season and the sometimes gloomy months to come any way you can. With our lack of sun, it is easy to feel a little blah. A great way to fight off those winter blues and update your look is with a richer or deeper hair color. A lot of people like to go darker for the winter but don’t know a good way to do it in a low commitment way. We are here to help.
Two great ways to go deeper for the season are low-lights (reverse highlighting) or a semi-permanent glaze.
Low-lighting is a foiling process done by weaving a deeper or richer hair color through the hair. This is sometimes referred to as reverse highlighting because instead of foiling with a lighter color we are depositing (not lifting) color for a darker tone. This creates shadows and dimension in the hair giving depth. You can use warm or cool colors depending on your preference.

If you already have light hair foiling in a warmer color a few shades darker can really update your look for winter
Another great way to add depth to your hair for winter is with a glaze. A glaze is a sheer, semi-permanent color applied all over the hair. At Studio 229 we use Redken Shades EQ for this process. It’s a great color that conditions and adds incredible shine. Being a semi-permanent hair color, it will fade gradually without leaving a harsh line at the roots during grow-out. It is also ammonia free and non-damaging. It is best to stay a only a few shades darker for a natural look.
Come into Studio 229 Hair Salon in Capitol Hill, Seattle for a free consultation and we can help you decide which hair color process will be right for you this winter.
Cheers and Happy Holidays!

When Studio 229 Hair Design and Spa thinks of Holiday Hair we think of the total package. We think of the hair cut, we think of the hair color and we think of glowing skin. We also think of a beautiful dress that wows those around you. Isn’t it nice to know that when you get ready for that holiday party that you are looking great? Well we here at Studio 229 are here to give you some simple tips to help the most everyday girl look her best for that up coming holiday event.
Lets start with the hair cut. If it has been awhile since you have had a hair cut well ladies it is probably time to get a hair cut. We know that it is the season of giving but one must also give a little to themselves. Even if you plan to wear your hair up some of those ends will poke out and hopefully you will wear soft curls that will hang lose and some ends will hang down. A good hair cut is one of the most inexpensive ways to make your hair behave and to keep it looking it’s best. Lets take a look at a couple of holiday up dos:

All of these hair styles are soft and flirty. They are feminine. The girls dress’ are pretty and their skin is glowing. Lets look at some more pictures of the total package:
Kerry is for sure the total sexy beautiful package. These last two images have great accessories. This is great because it can take a simple up do and make it look formal or much more “done”. Accessories for your hair can be purchased at any mall or department store. Putting your hair up can be easier than you think. If you start at the base of your neck and back comb your whole head of hair. Be patient and take small sections of hair. Curl your hair before you start. Hot rollers are the easiest method. Use lots of hair spray. Aerosol works the best because it drys the fastest. After you have your hair back combed use 3 imaginary sections; lower, middle and top. Begin to roll the lower section in a tight roll keeping it close to the nape of the neck and start to move upward toward the mid section incorporating that hair into your hands the clip and roll the hair into itself:
These pictures help you to get the idea. If your hair is long you can tuck, if your hair is shorter you will need to pin. You can leave some hair out on top for curls and pinning. Also, for a softer look than shown in these two photos pull some hair down from the bottom of the neck and put some barrel curls in with a curling iron. These photos are merely for an image of how to pull and twist your own hair. Here are some examples of what could be done after you have twisted your own holiday hair.
Holiday hair for 2011 is fun and flirty. It is bold and pretty. We at Studio 229 Hair Design and Spa hope that you have fun with all of your holiday parties and holiday hairstyles this season. We are always here to assist you. Whether you need your color touch-up or your hair cut we are here to give you glowing skin with our anti-aging facials and our glycolic peels and microdermabrasions. November 16, 2011M’lis Body Contour Wrap is the latest thing that Studio 229 Hair Design and Spa is offering. Based on the fact that one can lose 1/2 a dress size or pant size with each wrap and the health benefits of each of these wraps it seems like a fantastic wrap. The wrap was developed by a bio-chemist from the UCLA medical center. The process was originally formulated to encourage circulatory and lymphatic flow in patients. It was meant for those suffering from diabetes or any disease that inhibited circulation, especially in the lower extremities. Research showed that because of this increased flow of both the lymphatic and the circulatory systems, the patient was also experiencing cleansing of the tissues. This, in turn, caused healthy inch loss through internal cleansing.
Not only did the body benefit internally, but the external benefits of contouring and inch loss made this wrap ideal for the spa as well as the medical profession. Inch loss, diminishing of cellulite, and body contouring can be permanent and completely safe. Many body wraps have come and gone, but the M’LIS Body Contour Wrap has been has been helping people loose inches for over 25 years.
M’LIS Body Contour Benefits:
-Lose up to 1/2 dress size or pant size with each wrap.
-Provides cellulite reduction through detoxifying body cleansing.
-Benefits are immediate and the inch loss is real.
-Addresses the real causes of cellulite in a holistic way.
-Warm, luxurious, pampering and comfortable.
-Not a water loss-skin and body stay hydrated.
-Inch loss is permanent.
-Sanitary.
FOR BEST RESULTS:
A series of 3 to 6 body wraps is recommended.
There should be 4 to 7 days between each wrap. If a client is overweight and on a weight loss, program, a wrap is suggested for each 5 to 10 pounds lost.
Guarantee of 4 to 14 inches in 1 hour. This is not a weight loss, but a permanent inch loss. The inches will only return if the client goes back to old habits. Eating the right types of foods, proper exercise and drinking 8 glasses of water per day are always recommended.
We at Studio 229 are very excited to have this wrap and have completed the training for this amazing procedure. We have a lot of literature explaining what cellulite is and what the causes of cellulite are. It all makes total sense after reading it all. Yes, we too were skeptics but we are converts. We all want these wraps on a regular basis. We have priced them very reasonably at $125 for the service takes 90 minutes. Feel free to browse our web site at studio229.net or M’lis also has there own website. Feel free to google them.

October 20, 2011We all want to age gracefully. Taking care of our bodies and skin is something most people know to do but what about taking care of your hair? Remember the hair of our youths? Full, shiny, lustrous. Our hair changes as we age. We are also doing more to our hair with coloring, heat styling and just normal wear and tear.
Consider your hair as an investment. Choose products that are right for your hair type and ALWAYS protect from the heat and UV rays.
There are a number of products on the market with anti-aging properties.
One of our absolute favorites is Alterna’s Caviar Anti Aging Rapid Repair Spray.
This luxurious product will give you hair gorgeous shine and smooth down any fly-aways that can make your hair look frizzy and dull. Packed with vitamins, it will nourish your hair and protect it from any further damage.
The leading ladies of Hollywood use the best products to keep their hair looking it’s best. Why shouldn’t you? Having beautiful hair will make you feel confident and sexy. We could all use a little extra confidence, right?
It’s important to keep your hair looking modern and up to date as well. This doesn’t mean “trendy”, there are a lot of classic looks that are timeless and chic. Sharon Stone’s medium length bob is kept modern with it’s clean lines and natural looking color. Her hair has shine and looks effortless, never overdone.
Demi Moore keeps her chocolate locks super long. To keep your hair this long you must get it trimmed regularly to keep it looking full and healthy rather than straggly. There is nothing pretty about long hair that is frayed at the ends. It is better to get trims every 5 weeks rather than get more cut off every few months. Getting hair trimmed often promotes hair growth and prevents hair from splitting.
To conceal gray, highlights can be a great option to prevent a harsh grow out line. We love Diane Keaton’s highlights and choppy bob. Keeping the blonde highlights very light and cool will mimic gray and therefore blend it as it grows out. This can be an option if you’d like to incorporate some of your natural gray as well while still looking polished. Blonde highlights can also brighten your skin tone, preventing a washed out look.
So take care of your hair! Hair is one of the most obvious things people notice about you. Keep your hair looking fresh and youthful with a good cut, fresh color and nourishing products.
Have fun!

September 30, 2011When thinking about Fall hair color we think about great red heads. It is not unusual want to look like some of the stars that are hot in the press. After all these are the people who often inspire us. Some of their hair colors are done so beautifully.
This is the lead singer of paramore and her hair color is bright and fun. It is also dimensional. She wears it well.
Marcia Cross wears her red hair color much more subtle yet notice how the ends are a little lighter than the roots showing some dimension in the hair color. It is age appropriate and also a very beautiful hair color.
This is Christina Hendrix from Mad Men. I love the bright orange red hair color that she is flaunting. It looks great on her skin tone. She looks stunning.
There are several things to consider if you are thinking about coloring your hair red. First, think about your skin tone. If you have a lot of red in your skin you may want to shy away from to bright of a red color. Also, natural red heads tend to have fair complexions. If your skin is very dark you may want to stick with the darker red hair colors and save the lighter red hair colors for the fairer complexions.
If you decide to color your hair red be prepared to stand out. Red is a bright color. If you decide you want to be a little more subtle you can always put a little more brown hair color into the mix. You can also add some highlights or low-lights to break up the color and add dimension so that the color is not as flat. These are all things to discuss with your personal stylist. If you do decide to go red, best of luck, for there are so many fabulous red heads that we love, from the ones above to I Love Lucy, to Debra Messing to …..

2011 Urban Male Hair Cut
September 22, 2011The fastest growing market in the hair industry is mens’ hair. With men representing at least half of the population it comes as no surprise. Men want to look good and do not want to trust their GQ looks to a barber any longer. They are faithful clients who stylist can rely on to return in a timely manner. Gentlemen are even turning to color to perfect their fashionable looks and their trendy hair cuts.
Men realize that when they look good they feel good. They know that they are more confident when they look good which can mean an edge on the competition or even a salary increase. Looking good and taking care of yourself is synonymous with success.
What is looking good for the 2011 urban man? Studio 229 Hair Design would love to show all you beautiful men:
Although this hair cut is a little long on top it is edgy. It has lots of texture and he is playing it up. It could be worn less dramatic. Lets look at some cuts that are men are wearing a little less dramatic.
No problem with these men being Hands Down Handsome! Although this guy has wavy hair cropping the sides and leaving some movement on the top allows for him to show off the great texture that his hair has without being to hard for him to maintain. Sure he will have to come in to see his stylist every 3-4 weeks and this is why we love our men so much. When women are waiting 7-8 weeks we can really rely on our guys to fill in the gaps. Lets look at more hot 2011 men’s hair cuts:
Although this image is not a favorite it shows a 2011-2012 trend in men’s hair cuts. That is the disconnection between the sides of the hair and the top. See how they do not blend. Because his jaw is so square it would look much better if the top of his hair was cut straight off in the back part leaving the front the same length and then add bold blond tips to his hair for a more dramatic look. He is sporting the retro sunglasses so he should put on a 50′s tie and jacket or at least a cool button down shirt to go with his look. It is about pulling off your whole look and not just part of it.
One of the best ways to keep guys looking their best at Studio 229 Hair Design and Spa is by offering them maintenance hair cuts. Maintenance hair cuts are 15 minute dry hair cuts that are free of charge and are done half way in between the regular scheduled hair cut. Most guys wear their hair shorter on the sides so a maintenance hair cut provides them with the best service for keeping the hair cut always at its best. If you get your hair cut every 5 weeks you can probably go 6 with a maintenance. Check out our web site at studio229.com

Trend watch: rose, mauves and lilacs
September 8, 2011So back in April when we went to the Label m. hair show here in Seattle one of the trends that caught our eye was the use of this lovely rosy mauve hair color, kind of a faded muted pink. The results were super flattering, edgy but subtle and feminine. We knew this trend would catch on and no surprise to us lots of celebs are recently seen sporting this color recently.
Another great way to wear this color without doing your whole head is on ombre hair. A great way to change up the ombre do you may already have, why not add some dip dyed pinks to the already lightened ends to add a punch of color? We love this look!
Pink isn’t just for punks or little girls anymore. Not with these modern looks. Pink also washes out over time so don’t be afraid to just go for it! Come see us at Studio 229 for the perfect shade of rose or mauve!
