Extension Questions Answered
There are 4 essential extension questions that most clients love to ask right from the start: How much do extensions cost? Are extensions damaging? How long do extension lasts?, And what kind of extensions are the best? Let’s start with the last question, first.
What Kind of Extensions are Best?
The type of extension that is best for you is going to be based on the thickness of your hair. Extensions come in several types. Most salons use tape ins, micro beads or i-tips and Keratin (Glue). Personally, I believe keratin is too damaging so I stick to tape-in and micro beads. Sometimes a combination of the two types also works well. Tape ins are nice for building a base but don’t work well on the upper layers. Especially for wearing ones hair up.
Here is a client who has plenty of hair, as shown in the before photo.
Tape ins were applied to extend length:
How Long do Hair Extensions Last?
Hair Extensions lasts 6 weeks and then need to be “moved up.” Tape in hair can be moved up three times. I tip hair can moved up twice because the glue that bonds the extension together breaks down. If hair extensions are not moved up every six weeks, you risk your hair being damaged. This is because as your hair grows, the extension weighs down heavier and pulls harder on the attached hair.
Are Hair Extensions Damaging?
Hair extensions can be damaging if you don’t maintain them. If you have baby fine hair they can also be damaging. I believe that keratin hair extensions are also very damaging upon removal. Also, if extensions are not done correctly they can be damaging because hair overlapping causes breakage. Proper tools and hair, also essential. I know that you can find cheap hair but it will not have the shine or quality component, therefore, look. The stylist ability to blend your hair to the extension hair is a big part of the service. Keeping your hair healthy despite highlighting, like shown below, is essential when relying not only the blending ability of an extension expert.
What is the Cost of Hair Extensions?
The cost of hair extensions depends on if you would like to extend your length of if you would like to get a little volume added. In other words, how much hair do you need and what length would you like? Also, what type of extensions will we be using? I-tip extensions are a little more expensive than tape ins. With tape ins, they costs a little less to be installed and you can wear them one extra time. Also, if your hair is thick and your extending length you will need a lot of hair.
As you can see it is hard to quote a price without knowing a little something about the individual. What I can say is that most people wear 18″ extensions. These extensions come down past the middle of their back and blend well with the natural hair. A full head of tape ins, installed in medium textured hair, uses approximately 4 packs of extensions. Studio 229 Hair Salon doesn’t charge a markup on the hair. The cost is $99 a pack plus tax for a total of $440.00. Keep in mind, this is the cost for the hair only and approximate. The cost for installation is $250.00 In 18″ i-tips, 6 packs are needed for a full head on medium textured hair. At $69 a pack + beads $40, and tax = 494.00 for the hair only. The cost for installation is $150.00 an hour. It takes about 2 1/2 hours four a total of $375. Hair blending is a service that is done complementary as a part of the extension application.
Keep in mind that this is for the first application. Extensions must be maintained in order to look amazing so it is best to plan for costs in your long range budget. It is best to find an amazing extension expert to apply and care for your extensions. A stylists who has a lot of experience and training will serve you well.

Hair Salon Definitions
Have you ever felt like you need a special dictionary to understand hair salon definitions? Most of us know what a pixie or bob haircut is but the word texture gets used to describe both haircuts and color. Wait, what? Words like balayage and foilayage are hard enough to pronounce let alone understand. Well, let’s set the record straight and define these hair salon terms in a clear, easy to understand salon definitions list.
Color Hair Salon Definitions
All over color: #color Hair color, either permanent or Demi permanent that is applied to all of the hair. The color can either go darker or lighter depending on the volume of peroxide used.
Peroxide: #peroxide Peroxide activates the hair color. Peroxide also opens the cuticle of each hair follicle in order for the hair to accept the hair color.
Glaze: #glaze A glaze is a Demi permanent all over hair color that has no ammonia. The peroxide is very low and therefore can only deposit color or make your hair darker. It can also be used to tone hair. It also has a lot of conditioning qualities.
Foil #foil A foil is the sectioning and then weaving of small strands of hair to achieve a multi-dimensional look.
Highlight #highlight A highlight is basically the same as a foil where the stylist weaves sections of hair for a dimensional look.
Toner: #toner A toner is used after your hair has been lightened to refine the hair color and make it look amazing.
Foilayage #foilayage (foil- lee- ayge) A foilayage gives the same look as a balayage but is put into foil because the hair is either too dark or has previously been colored. The foils keep the lightner moist and hold in heat. Therefore the hair comes up lighter.
Balayage #balayage (ba.- lee –ayge) A balayage hair color is hand painted and blended by the stylist physically. Therefore the growout is natural because there is a less of a distinct line between the two colors.
Bleach and tone #bleachandtone Bleach is applied all over one’s head and then a toner is applied to refine the color.
Semi-permanent hair color/fashion hair color. #fashioncolors The hair must be pre lightened or bleached in order for the colors to take.
Oh, texture to describe both haircut and color? I won’t leave you hanging. When used to describe a haircut it’s the movement created by cutting shorter hairs throughout. With color, it’s the amount of dimensional different colors. Often they compliment each other. But wait, there’s one more definition. Texture also refers to the amount of curl or the weight in your hair. It’s where the strands of your hair create shape. This is why having the right stylist is so important. A seasoned stylist understands how to create balance and weight in both your color and haircut. This will help you maintain your hair and your hair will grow out nicer.

The benefits balayage hair color go beyond any other type of hair color in history. Balayage hair color is painted onto the hair for a more natural and easier grow out. Balayage Hair Color is the only hair color that can be done every six months and still look great. This is why balayage color has become popular among every age group. Not only is balayage color low maintenance, it’s also beautiful. This is because balayage can add a ton of dimension. Balayage can also be customized to fit your lifestyle. As you can see, there are a ton of benefits to balayage color but let me explain in little detail because, there’s more!
I know that earlier I stated that balayage hair color can be done every six months and still look great. The truth is that some people even go a whole year. I recommend going as long as you feel comfortable. Also, to be honest, your hair will look better if you “refresh” it with a glaze. This is a non-amonia, gel-like hair color made by Redken. This will keep your color looking great. Perhaps do this about every 3 months. This is because when your hair is lightened it doesn’t come up to the beautiful color that it is when you leave the salon. It fades with time. Refreshing your hair color can make it seem new again. This process is a lot cheaper and faster than the whole balayage lightening process.
Benefit Balayage Hair Color: Dimensional Hair Color
Balayage hair color is traditionally darker at the root and lighter at the ends. There also traditionally tends to be some face framing lighter pieces. Although there are many different customizable types of balayage hair colors, painting lightener onto your hair is the name of the game. Lightening your natural color is easiest but you may have hair color on your hair. Balayage is still the perfect way to get dimension with your hair color. Your stylist may have to cover your hair with saran wrap or may choose to do a technique called foilyage if you want to go lighter. Either way the same look can be achieved. Here are some photos of grown out and new balayage hair colors.
More benefits balayage hair color:
These are just a couple, of many, customizable looks and benefits that can be achieved with balayage hair color. Literally any combination or hair color can be utilized to make the balayage service unique to you. A seasoned stylist would take into consideration the thickness of your hair, your natural hair color and texture, the condition of your hair, and of course, your desires and lifestyle (how much maintenance you are willing to do, and your job requirements).
Other customizable looks include less or more hair color. Your natural color can be totally changed. Here is an extreme example where we bleached a clients hair and then did a balayage hair color in pastels adding a couple of extensions.
Since the color above is such an extreme example, here is a subtle more highlighted look.
Amazing Hair Color
Amazing hair color begins with shine, texture and flow. In order to achieve amazing hair color you need an amazing stylist. Amazing hair color comes with by way of an amazing salon where stylists are trained to see your hair, skin and lifestyle all as one component and big picture. They tie it all together in order to give you the best outcome. Amazing hair color usually has some depth, even if your hair color is blonde it needs some dimension and movement (flow). This is what is meant by texture in hair color. The shine is important too. You cannot have amazing hair color and have dull hair. Your hair must, I repeat must be healthy to be amazing. Some of us have this image of a model, hair blowing in a fan. That is not what will make your hair color look amazing. This is:
First and foremost, never lighten your hair without using the bond multiplier Olaplex. It is a patented product and it will save your hair. I also highly recommend that you take home Olaplex #3 and use it once a week. It will keep your hair healthy in between hair color treatments. Because your hair is healthy it will also maintain it’s natural shine.
Also, if you blow dry your hair, try using a light mist shine spray from the mid-shaft down. What this does is calm the fly-aways that we all get. It also adds to the shine. My favorite is Kenra Silkening Mist because it is light and smells like vanilla and cherry dream. Here is how it looks:
Amazing hair color is also dependent on texture. Texture relies on your hair color having multi-dimension. Even if you choose to have only one color or all over color it should have several colors when the light hits it. Amazing hair color looks lighter in sunlight and darker indoors. Your hair color should reflect light, even without highlights or balayage treatments. If you do choose those treatments you will have more texture and dimension. It all depends on your desired look. Remember that contrast and similarities in the colors that you choose will determine the amount of texture that you get. For example, if you choose a very dark base color and a light highlight color you will have a lot of dimension. Where if you choose a medium base color and a caramel highlight you will have a much more subtle amount of dimension. Let’s take a look at both:
Here is a photo taken of a clients hair who we decided that putting both some warm hair color tones and blonde hair color tones would add great texture.
Flow and amazing hair color
Flow and amazing hair color work in two ways. First, you must have a haircut that works with your color and face shape. Secondly, please, please get your haircut regularly. If you have split ends that are dry and weighing down your hair you are not going to have the healthy, shiny flowy hair that you want. Also, if you have heavy thick hair and it needs to be thinned out it is not going to flow or move well if it has been three months since you have had a haircut. A trim will go a long way in making and keeping your amazing hair color amazing. Long hair that is unhealthy is not pretty ladies. Please consider taking off a little each time you get it colored. In the long run, your hair will thank you with amazing hair color!
Here at Studio 229 we specialize in custom hair color and we always use Olaplex when lightening the hair. We have several other blogs where we have posted pictures of our work. Here are some of those links:

Natural/Organic Products are the best choice for your hair, skin and the planet. The reason is because additives like sulfates strip out hair color and parabens contribite to the growth of breast cancer cells (https://www.webmd.com/breast-cancer/news/20151027/parabens-breast-cancer#1). Parabens are commonly found in products like Nivea skin cream and other popular products carried in salons, online and in grocery stores. Sojourn Natural Hair Care Products
Sojourn is a nice line of Natural hair care products that caters to people who a conscious about what type of chemicals that they put on their hair. Of course, like Neuma, they don’t use parabens, synthetic fragrances etc. We here at Studio 229 have had this product on our shelves for several years and really enjoy the line. It is my favorite hair spray and I use their leave on conditioner on everybody before I cut their hair. You really cannot go wrong with this line. There claim to fame is that the product balances out the PH of your hair. I have found this to be true. Although I have no way to measure the ph of my hair, it does feel soft and luxurious after several shampoos and conditions of using this product line. This is why we continue to use this line year after year. Natural, with consistent results is all anyone can ask for in a professional hair care line.
The point is it is always a good idea to pay attention to the ingredients in the products that you put on your body.
