Hair Accessories are great. So I have been growing my hair for a year now and find myself getting very frustrated with the “awkward stages” I have turned to hair accessories. I know most of my clients are growing their hair out as well, so i thought i would make a post about how to use them.
My goto place to find inexpensive hair flowers, headbands, colorful bobby pins, and wraps is Forever 21. They usually cost anywhere from $1.50 – $6
First rule, DON”t over think it. I tell my clients this when im teaching them new ways to style their hair. if you think about it too much you will get frustrated. Just go into it thinking “My hair is going to be so COOL today!” you also have to just own up to whatever it you come up with
Second, when it comes to bobby pins remember the “taco rule”. One of my biggest pet peeves is when bobby pins are showing (when it is just put it in and it doesn’t match their hair color). Take your Bobbie pin (aka “Taco”), open it and put the open side on either side of the piece of hair ( aka “meat” or if you are a vegetarian your “cheese”) you are trying to pin back… make sure you can feel the two sides of bobby pin on your head…Now for the tricky part, You want to push the pin towards the “base” of desired section you are pinning back. Please DO NOT get frustrated!!! this could take practice. Once it looks good, take your fancy pin and stick it in to where you can see the decorative flower, or feather, or whatever it is you have.
Third, Headbands. These are pretty easy to use. I some times will pin my hair back with rule 2 then throw a band on over it. The other day I got sick of the HB I had so I opened my craft box and pulled out a leather strand for making necklaces, it was about two feet. I ended up just wrapping it around, and around, tied it in a bow at the nape of my neck and ROCKED IT! Get creative girls!!!!
Fourth, Head scarfs and wraps. These are easy to use as well. I usually just tie it around and bow it up in the back, sometimes i get creative and tie bow on top. I remember watching Save The Last Dance, when they where going to the club for the first time and Julia asked if she “looked okay?” her friend quickly pulled her in the car and took off her sweater and tied it around her head, with the ball off to the side!!!! OMG i LOVED it. I will buy bright skirts with patterns at the thrift store and use those in the very same way they did.
Here are some photos I found that might inspire you.
