Hair Salon Definitions
Have you ever felt like you need a special dictionary to understand hair salon definitions? Most of us know what a pixie or bob haircut is but the word texture gets used to describe both haircuts and color. Wait, what? Words like balayage and foilayage are hard enough to pronounce let alone understand. Well, let’s set the record straight and define these hair salon terms in a clear, easy to understand salon definitions list.
Color Hair Salon Definitions
All over color: #color Hair color, either permanent or Demi permanent that is applied to all of the hair. The color can either go darker or lighter depending on the volume of peroxide used.
Peroxide: #peroxide Peroxide activates the hair color. Peroxide also opens the cuticle of each hair follicle in order for the hair to accept the hair color.
Glaze: #glaze A glaze is a Demi permanent all over hair color that has no ammonia. The peroxide is very low and therefore can only deposit color or make your hair darker. It can also be used to tone hair. It also has a lot of conditioning qualities.
Foil #foil A foil is the sectioning and then weaving of small strands of hair to achieve a multi-dimensional look.
Highlight #highlight A highlight is basically the same as a foil where the stylist weaves sections of hair for a dimensional look.
Toner: #toner A toner is used after your hair has been lightened to refine the hair color and make it look amazing.
Foilayage #foilayage (foil- lee- ayge) A foilayage gives the same look as a balayage but is put into foil because the hair is either too dark or has previously been colored. The foils keep the lightner moist and hold in heat. Therefore the hair comes up lighter.
Balayage #balayage (ba.- lee –ayge) A balayage hair color is hand painted and blended by the stylist physically. Therefore the growout is natural because there is a less of a distinct line between the two colors.
Bleach and tone #bleachandtone Bleach is applied all over one’s head and then a toner is applied to refine the color.
Semi-permanent hair color/fashion hair color. #fashioncolors The hair must be pre lightened or bleached in order for the colors to take.
Oh, texture to describe both haircut and color? I won’t leave you hanging. When used to describe a haircut it’s the movement created by cutting shorter hairs throughout. With color, it’s the amount of dimensional different colors. Often they compliment each other. But wait, there’s one more definition. Texture also refers to the amount of curl or the weight in your hair. It’s where the strands of your hair create shape. This is why having the right stylist is so important. A seasoned stylist understands how to create balance and weight in both your color and haircut. This will help you maintain your hair and your hair will grow out nicer.

Natural/Organic Products are the best choice for your hair, skin and the planet. The reason is because additives like sulfates strip out hair color and parabens contribite to the growth of breast cancer cells (https://www.webmd.com/breast-cancer/news/20151027/parabens-breast-cancer#1). Parabens are commonly found in products like Nivea skin cream and other popular products carried in salons, online and in grocery stores. There are many other additives (formaldehyde, gluten, denatured alcohol, artificial colors etc.) in non natural/organic products that have no benefits for your hair or skin. Therefore, it is best to stick with products that are as natural/organic as possible. Here at Studio 229 hair design and spa we do are best to find and carry natural/organic products that offer amazing results. Here are some of our choices.

The thing we here love most about Neuma products is that they are natural. The other things that we love is that they lather well, smell great, work by giving the hair great body, shine and are priced well. This product is very nice in comparison to other professional products and we are very happy we brought it into the salon. Here is a photo of the Neuma line at Studio 229 Hair Design and Spa:
Sojourn Natural Hair Care Products
Sojourn is a nice line of Natural hair care products that caters to people who a conscious about what type of chemicals that they put on their hair. Of course, like Neuma, they don’t use parabens, synthetic fragrances etc. We here at Studio 229 have had this product on our shelves for several years and really enjoy the line. It is my favorite hair spray and I use their leave on conditioner on everybody before I cut their hair. You really cannot go wrong with this line. There claim to fame is that the product balances out the PH of your hair. I have found this to be true. Although I have no way to measure the ph of my hair, it does feel soft and luxurious after several shampoos and conditions of using this product line. This is why we continue to use this line year after year. Natural, with consistent results is all anyone can ask for in a professional hair care line.
The point is it is always a good idea to pay attention to the ingredients in the products that you put on your body. We at Studio 229 will make sure that all of the products that we sell to you are safe for you, your family and the planet. We promise to do our best to research every product line and make the best informed decision possible.
Highlights on Your Hair
Highlights on your hair are a great way to add some dimension. Even if you have a balayage right now, highlights create a little blending between your balayage and the root area. I love to put a couple of babylights around the face to refresh a balayage and then paint some lightener on the ends. This is a really quick way to refresh things and brighten a hair color that has gotten dull with time. Add a nice toner over the top and wala — perfection.
She still has her beautiful balayage but now she also has dimensional hair color all the way to the top. Her hair will grow out well and she can come in in 2-3 months if she would like and get her roots touched up with a partial highlight or she can bump her base a little and go for more of a balayage look. Either way the maintenance is minimal for someone who wears their hair this blonde.
Granted her natural color is pretty light. Consider staying a more caramel color if you are looking for low maintenance and you have dark hair. You can still get the same great look. It will probably look better on your skin tone too as people with dark hair tend to have a darker skin tone that looks better with keeping the hair a little bit warmer. Although I have seen all sorts of colors on all skin tones and am surprised at what people pull off. It’s all about your personal style.
For example this pretty lady had black hair color on her hair. She wanted to go ash blonde. After her second appointment we finally got her to an ash blonde and got most of the orange out of her ends. We did a balayage on her but put it in foils to keep the heat in and bring up the color. Of course we used the bond multiplyer, #Olaplex to keep her hair healthy. Although she is part Jamaican, so she has darker skin, this blonde hair looks very good on her.
I highly recommend it.

Highlights in the winter are different from other seasons in that they tend to be a bit cooler, a bit darker, and not as vibrant. Even if you are a natural blonde think about adding some low-lights or perhaps an ash color blonde in the winter to go with your more subdued wardrobe. We here at Studio 229 Hair Design love doing highlights (or lowlights) but want to stress that there is a difference between the way the sun hits your hair depending on the season. Don’t worry about going a little darker or cooler in the winter with your highlights. You will still have the dimension that you seek with the highlights and the color will fade with time. In the Spring you will be able to go lighter again if you wish. Here is a photo cooler blonde:
Toning the hair gives the hair a more refined look and will give the hair just that: the tone. You will get 3-4 weeks from your toner. Therefore, the cool tone will only last 3-4 weeks. However you should be able to come back in and get the toner touched up for a minimal fee (about $45). This is the cost of a blow out. Your hair will still look good without the toner but it will not have the same ashy look. If it is going into spring, it may be better to let it go more towards its brighter color. By the way, a toner is not damaging on your hair.
If interested in talking about your hair for any season please feel free to contact studio 229! We would love to consult with you. Matching hair with skin tone, eyes and season, as well as lifestyle is my thing. Here are some links to other blogs about hair color too if you want to keep reading….
